Autumn sports season is in full swing. Youth sports give children a chance to learn teamwork, get fit and socialize. No matter what fall sports they participate in – soccer, soccer, volleyball, volleyball and the like – injuries such as sprains and strains can be very common. What can you do to keep your young athletes safer on the field? Here are tips from the National Institutes of Health to help protect them from sports-related injuries.

Get a physical exam

Physical exams can determine if your children are healthy enough to play and can also detect any pre-existing conditions that may affect their performance.

USE THE APPROPRIATE PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Before purchasing a new youth sport equipment, have your child give it a try. Make sure the gear fits correctly and is neither too big nor too small. If your child already owns equipment, inspect it closely for wear that might affect its performance.

Warm up before each exercise or game

Warm up before going to the field can reduce the possibility of injury. Light jogging can also help relieve muscle tension.

Drink plenty of fluids

To prevent dehydration, drink water before, during and after playing. Children and teens are more likely to drink flavored drinks, rather than plain water, so keep some sports drinks in your cooler.

Avoid Overtraining

Children who push themselves to excel can During excessive exercise they hurt themselves. If you notice sudden changes in their behavior, such as irritability, tiredness, and lack of enthusiasm, they may indicate exhaustion. If the activity requires a lot of athletes, consider a less intense activity.

Get plenty of rest

Help them with their daily schedule to allow them to get plenty of sleep. Sleep deprivation hampers performance on the field and can contribute to sports injuries.
